Summary

A hospital network in Kansas City had a problem with their existing outsourced medical coding services. A significant percentage of their denials was due to coding errors.

Challenge

The hospital had a dedicated in-house coding team as well as an outsourced team. ICD-10 was being adopted across the healthcare industry during this period and the hospital was in a dilemma on whether this was a good time to streamline their coding process.

Solution

NYX’s coding team worked with the hospital for a month along with their in-house team and made a coordinated effort to put balances and checks in place for the coding process. We also trained their in-house coding team on ICD-10 migration.

Result

With a coordinated work effort, the denials due to coding dropped to less than 2% from as high as 25%.
